AbbeySoul April 2005

AbbeySoul, The Abbey Hotel, Malvern, Worcs.  April 16th 2005

Word's this month come from Rob Hurcomb

Well what can you say, a great night was had by all, doors opened at 7.45 with people waiting outside ready to bag their tables, Steve on early doors playing modern tunage till kick off time at 8pm, some good music easing the early arrivals into the mood, feet were tapping and people were chatting, a few dancers ventured forth onto the floor. The groups of arrivals became more frequent and by 9 pm the room was filling fast, Don had taken over by this time and upped the tempo a little, soon the floor was full, Duly noted that Channel 3’s ‘Sweetest Thing’ got an early outing as did the Carstairs; Don was making sure the other DJ,s had to work later in the night as we try not to repeat any tunes.

As usual at the Abbey Hotel there is a good mix of Motown, Club Soul and Northern and tonight was no exception, all classics with some well known tunes played next to more obscure ones but the emphasis on keeping the floor full, from The Supremes ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ to Rita De Costa ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ including Sharon Jones + the Dap Kings ‘How Long Do I Have To Wait For You’

With a full dance floor all night, I hope that we are getting the music right, there are so many requests that come in during the night that we can’t hope to play all of them but we try our best, and there is always next time. top tunes that I heard and had me on the floor included; Barbara McNair ‘Your Gonna Love My Baby’, Robert Parker ‘Caught You In A Lie’, nice to hear Millie Jackson ‘House For Sale’ too.

As people have been asking where can they obtain the music we play at the abbey, our old friend Mr Tee from Kidderminster was in attendance and was kept busy selling various compilation CD’s, so if you’re looking for tunes, stop by his table just inside the door, bargains to be had.

Many thanks for coming along

Rob

Now what makes these nights really special, apart from raising oodles of money for Motor Neurone, is the people, it is a sheer joy to see all the smiling faces as they have themselves a really great time, old friendships reunited and past times reminisced, how many times have I heard “oh my gawd is that really you”, some of us may have gained a few pounds or lost a bit of hair but for a few hours on a Saturday night at the Abbey Hotel we are all 18 again. This time we had people coming from Gloucester, London, Tenbury, Ludlow and Kidderminster to name but a few locations, we thinks that AbbeySoul is gaining something of a reputation!!

Take a look at the photos to see if you can spot anyone you know, if you haven’t been yet get those tickets booked, the October date is already selling well. The other good news is that we have raised £930 this time so pat yourselves on the back because without you we could not hope to raise this kind of money, a big THANK YOU

As has already been said a tremendous atmosphere on Saturday 16th April with the crowds only thinning towards the last ½ hour, so once again many thanks to all who were there for making it a wonderful evening, see you all again in October.
